Perforated eardrum, artwork

Perforated eardrum. Artwork of a perforated (torn) eardrum (right), or tympanic membrane, and a normal eardrum (left), as seen from the outer ear. The eardrum is a very thin membrane and can easily be torn by trauma, infection, a loud noise, or the insertion of a foreign object into the ear canal. The eardrum transmits sounds, by vibration, from the outer ear to the middle ear. Therefore perforation of the eardrum can reduce hearing. A perforated eardrum should heal within a month or so, but if badly damaged may require surgery

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a perforated eardrum, serving as both an artwork and a medical illustration. The image presents a side-by-side comparison of a torn eardrum on the right and a healthy one on the left, as viewed from the outer ear. Delicate and fragile, the eardrum can be easily damaged by various factors such as trauma, infection, loud noises, or foreign objects inserted into the ear canal. The significance of this membrane becomes evident when we understand its role in transmitting sounds through vibrations from the outer to middle ear. Consequently, any perforation in the eardrum can lead to reduced hearing capabilities. While most perforations heal naturally within approximately one month's time, severe damage may necessitate surgical intervention. This thought-provoking artwork invites contemplation about our precious sense of hearing and highlights how vulnerable our bodies can be to injury. It also sheds light on medical conditions like otitis media (middle ear infection) that could contribute to such injuries. Through this visually striking depiction created by Science Photo Library, viewers are encouraged to appreciate their auditory health while gaining insight into an often overlooked aspect of human anatomy – reminding us all to cherish and protect our senses for optimal well-being.
