Afghanistan Medal, Second Afghan War 1878-1880

This medal, together with two clasps, was awarded to Captain G.F. Call who served with the Royal Engineers. It is one of 17 campaign medals awarded to members of the Call family, now in the museum collection. The medals date from the Peninsular War (1807-1814) to the Great War (1914-1918). The medal was awarded to members of the British and Indian armies who served in Afghanistan between 1878-1880 during the Second Afghan War. The clasps awarded are for the Battle of Ahmed Khel (19th April 1880) and the Battle of Kandahar (1st September 1880). The Battle of Kandahar was the last conflict in the war. The bronze medal features the bust of Queen Victoria on the obverse with the inscription VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX. The reverse shows troops on horseback with an elephant and the inscription AFGHANISTAN 1878-79-80. The rim is inscribed with the recipients rank, name and regiment. The ribbon features vertical stripes of red and green. TRURI : 1931.40.51

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Afghanistan Medal, a prestigious honor awarded during the Second Afghan War from 1878 to 1880. The medal belonged to Captain G. F. Call of the Royal Engineers and is now part of the esteemed museum collection, alongside 16 other campaign medals belonging to various members of the Call family. The bronze medal itself bears Queen Victoria's bust on one side, adorned with the inscription "VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX". On its reverse, troops on horseback are depicted alongside an elephant, symbolizing their valiant service in Afghanistan between 1878 and 1880. Notably, two clasps accompany this distinguished medal – one for the Battle of Ahmed Khel on April 19th, 1880, and another for the Battle of Kandahar on September 1st that same year. Significantly marking the end of this war-torn era, these clasps hold historical significance as they represent pivotal conflicts fought by British and Indian armies. The recipient's rank, name, and regiment are inscribed along the rim of this remarkable piece. Displayed proudly against a backdrop featuring vertical stripes in red and green representing bravery and hope respectively; this photograph captures not only a tangible piece of history but also pays tribute to those who served courageously during tumultuous times. With MIke Searle behind its lens capturing every intricate detail flawlessly; it serves as a testament to valorous acts that should never be forgotten or overlooked.
