Pelvic spinal nerves

Pelvic spinal nerves. Historical anatomical artwork of the spinal nerves (white) in the human pelvic region. This side view (front of the body at right) is obtained by removing the buttock and other major muscles to show the sacrum (base of the spine, upper left). Bones (yellow), ligaments (white) and muscles (red) are also seen. The holes in the sacrum allow nerve branches to emerge from the spinal cord, but the thick white areas are mostly the spinal ligaments. One of the thick white areas (at lower centre, running vertically down into the leg) is the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body. Artwork from The Nerves of the Human Body (Ed. Jones Quain, London, 1839)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork showcases the intricate network of pelvic spinal nerves in the human body. The print, dating back to 1839, provides a deep insight into the anatomy of the male torso. By removing major muscles and exposing the sacrum, or base of the spine, this side view offers a unique perspective on the nervous system. Highlighted in white are the spinal nerves emerging from their respective holes in the sacrum. These nerve branches play a crucial role in transmitting signals throughout our body. Notably, one thick white area represents the sciatic nerve - an essential component responsible for relaying messages down into our legs. As we delve deeper into this illustration, bones appear yellow while ligaments take on a pristine white hue and muscles radiate with vibrant red tones. The level of detail captured by this 19th-century drawing is truly remarkable. It serves as both an artistic masterpiece and an invaluable resource for medical professionals studying neurology and anatomy alike. This print from "The Nerves of Human Body" textbook published by Jones Quain in London stands as a testament to scientific exploration during that era. Science Photo Library proudly presents this piece as part of its extensive collection documenting humanity's quest to understand ourselves from centuries past until now.
