Papillae on the tongue

Papillae on tongue, coloured historical artwork. On the tongue most tastebuds, the structures that provide information about the taste of food, sit on small platforms called papillae. There are different types of papillae; the central papilla here is a fungiform papilla, so called because of its mushroom-like shape. They are highly vascular and well innervated (blood vessels are shown in red and blue, nerves in white). This illustration is taken from the 19th century French textbook The Atlas of Human Anatomy and Surgery by J. M. Bourgery and N. H. Jacob

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and colorful world of papillae on the tongue. Taken from a 19th-century French textbook, this historical artwork provides a detailed look at the structures responsible for our sense of taste. The papillae, small platforms on which tastebuds reside, are beautifully depicted in vibrant hues. In particular, the central papilla featured here is known as a fungiform papilla due to its resemblance to a mushroom. These papillae are richly supplied with blood vessels (depicted in red and blue) and nerves (shown in white), highlighting their vital role in transmitting taste information. The artistic rendering not only captures the anatomical accuracy but also offers an insight into surgical imagery prevalent during that era. This sectioned view of the oral cavity allows us to appreciate the complexity and sophistication of our biological makeup. As we gaze upon this false-colored historical image, we are reminded of how far our understanding of human anatomy has come since then. It serves as a testament to both scientific progress and artistic representation within medical education. With its fusion of biology, surgery, artistry, and history, this print from Science Photo Library truly encapsulates the beauty found within our own bodies while honoring centuries-old knowledge passed down through generations.
