Mitosis. Immunofluorescence light micrograph of a cell during prophase of mitosis (nuclear division). During mitosis two daughter nuclei are formed from one parent nucleus. During prophase, chromosomes (yellow) condense into defined units, allowing organised and equal segregation into daughter nuclei. Also the nuclear envelope breaks down, allowing microtubules (blue) to interact with the chromosomes. Chromosomes are made up of two identical chromatids. Microtubules are protein filaments that form spindles, which attach to the chromosomes and pull the sister chromatids to opposite poles of the cell
