Horsetail cone, light micrograph

Horsetail cone, light micrograph. Longitudinal section through a young cone (strobilus) of the rough horsetail (Equisetum hyemale). This is an off-centre section, not passing through the central axis. The structures making up most of the cone are sporophylls consisting of a stalk bearing numerous sack-like hanging sporangia containing the spores. The sporangia consist of large cells (light blue) containing spores (red-black dots). The smaller, hexagonal areas are the stalks. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres high

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a close-up view of a horsetail cone, revealing its intricate internal structure. The image captures a longitudinal section through a young cone, providing an off-centre perspective that highlights the various components within. The dominant structures in the cone are sporophylls, which consist of stalks adorned with numerous sack-like hanging sporangia containing spores. These sporangia are composed of large cells depicted in light blue, each housing tiny red-black dots representing the spores themselves. The smaller hexagonal areas visible in the photo represent the stalks connecting these reproductive structures. With a magnification of x14 when printed at 10 centimetres high, this micrograph allows us to marvel at the cellular complexity and botanical beauty present within this horsetail cone. This stunning image not only offers insight into plant anatomy but also serves as a testament to nature's remarkable diversity and adaptability. It invites viewers to explore the wonders of botany and biology while appreciating the delicate balance between reproduction and survival in plants like equisetum hyemale or rough horsetail. Captured by Science Photo Library, this visually striking print is perfect for anyone fascinated by scientific exploration or seeking inspiration from nature's intricate designs.
