Cotton plant root, light micrograph
Cotton plant root. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a root of the cotton plant (Gossypium hirsutum). The layers from outer to centre (some very thin) are the inner cork cambium (phellogen, light brown), the primary and secondary phloem with layers of fibres (dark brown) and phloem (blue), the medullary rays of parenchyma (brown), cambium (blue), xylem (red/orange). The central vascular cylinder acts like a cable to resist winds that could uproot the plant. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres wide
