British Isles from space

False-colour satellite image of the British Isles and north-west Europe captured on a relatively cloud-free day. The whole of the UK and Ireland is visible, as is part of France, the Benelux countries and some of Denmark. Snow may be seen on the Alps at bottom right. The clouds that may be seen are in the far north along the north polar front, and in the Atlantic (left) where low-level cloud and fog dominate. This image was made using data from the NOa 7 weather satellite on 23 April 1984. Science Photo Library features Science and Medical images including photos and illustrations. © NRSC LTD/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the breathtaking beauty of the British Isles and north-west Europe as seen from space. Taken on a remarkably clear day, this false-colour satellite image offers a mesmerizing view of the entire UK and Ireland, extending to parts of France, the Benelux countries, and even Denmark. Nature's artistry is evident in the snow-capped Alps visible at the bottom right corner, adding an enchanting touch to this already stunning composition. While most of the landscape appears lush and green, there are intriguing elements that catch one's eye. The presence of clouds along the north polar front in far northern regions creates a dramatic contrast against vast stretches of blue sky. Additionally, low-level cloud formations dominate over parts of the Atlantic on the left side. Captured using data from NOa 7 weather satellite on 23 April 1984 by Science Photo Library, this image provides an invaluable perspective on our planet's geography and earth sciences. It allows us to appreciate both its grandeur and intricacies from a unique vantage point high above Earth's surface.
