Antarctic ocean current, computer model
Antarctic ocean current. Computer model of the Antarctic circumpolar current in the Southern Ocean on the 12th May 2006. Ocean current data from satellites, floating drifters and radio-tagged marine animals were processed by a supercomputer to produce an accurate and high resolution model of the Southern Ocean. The Antarctic circumpolar current is the largest current in the world and travels clockwise around Antarctica (centre), keeping warm water away from the Antarctic. The speed of the current is shown, ranging from slow moving blue water to dark red (more than 1.6 kilometres per hour)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a computer model of the Antarctic circumpolar current, captured on the 12th of May in 2006. Utilizing ocean current data collected from satellites, floating drifters, and radio-tagged marine animals, this high-resolution model was generated by a powerful supercomputer. The Antarctic circumpolar current is renowned as the largest current worldwide, encircling Antarctica in a clockwise motion while effectively keeping warm water at bay from this icy continent. The image vividly illustrates the varying speeds of this mighty current; ranging from tranquil blue waters to intense dark red hues representing speeds exceeding an impressive 1.6 kilometers per hour. This visual representation provides valuable insights into the dynamic nature of our planet's climate system. With its spherical shape serving as a backdrop for this intricate simulation, it serves as a reminder of Earth's complex interconnectedness and how each component plays a vital role in shaping our global climate patterns. From meteorological phenomena to oceanographic processes, every element contributes to maintaining equilibrium within our delicate ecosystem. This remarkable photograph not only highlights scientific advancements but also emphasizes the significance of understanding and monitoring these natural forces that govern our planet's health. It serves as both an educational tool and an awe-inspiring testament to humanity's ongoing pursuit of knowledge about our world's oceans and their impact on Earth's overall well-being.
