Neisseria meningitidis bacterium

False-colour transmission electron micrograph of Neisseria meningitidis, a spherical bacterium which causes meningitis in humans. The blebs surrounding the cell wall here are extra cellular material shed by the bacterium. Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, the membranes enclosing the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms include intense headache, fever, loss of appetite, intolerance of light and sound, muscle rigidity and, in severe cases, convulsions, vomiting and delirium leading to death. Bacterial meningitis is treated with antibiotics or sulphonamides. Magnification: x15, 850 at 6x4.5cm size

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Neisseria meningitidis bacterium, responsible for causing meningitis in humans. The false-color transmission electron micrograph reveals a spherical bacterium surrounded by blebs of extracellular material it has shed. Meningitis is characterized by inflammation of the meninges, which are protective membranes enveloping the brain and spinal cord. The symptoms associated with this severe condition include intense headaches, fever, loss of appetite, sensitivity to light and sound, muscle rigidity, convulsions, vomiting, delirium, and even death in severe cases. However daunting these symptoms may be, bacterial meningitis can be effectively treated using antibiotics or sulphonamides. At a magnification level of x15,850 and measuring 6x4.5cm in size, this image provides an up-close look at the bacteria that cause such havoc within our bodies. It offers valuable insights into the world of microbiology and bacteriology while highlighting the importance of understanding these microorganisms' structures and behaviors. Science Photo Library presents this remarkable photograph as part of their extensive collection on transmission electron microscopy (TEM), showcasing various microbes responsible for diseases like meningococcal meningitis or spotted fever. This particular image sheds light on Neisseria meningitidis—also known as meningococcus—a significant contributor to cerebrospinal meningitis.
