Sopwith Models: denudation & faulting

Models showing the effect of denudation and faulting on how rock strata appear at the surface. Thomas Sopwith (1803 - 1879) was an eminent geologist and civil engineer who pioneered methods of representing geological features. This set of wooden models were designed to represent geological situations with faults, folds, inclines and strata that were particularly relevant to the mining industry

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a collection of intricately carved wooden models by the renowned 19th century geologist and civil engineer, Thomas Sopwith (1803-1879). The models, displayed against a black background, illustrate the profound impact of denudation and faulting on the appearance of rock strata at the Earth's surface. Denudation, the process of wearing away of the Earth's surface through various natural agents, is vividly depicted in these models. Erosion, a primary agent of denudation, is illustrated through the erosional features, such as overcut and undercut, that characterize the models' edges. The eroded strata reveal the layered nature of the geological formations, highlighting the importance of stratigraphy in understanding the Earth's history. Faulting, another geological phenomenon, is also represented in these models. Faults, which occur when the Earth's crust moves, causing the rocks to break and shift, are depicted as distinct lines or planes in the models. The juxtaposition of faulted and unfaulted strata provides a striking visual representation of the complex geological processes that shape our landforms. Sopwith's models were designed to educate and provide a better understanding of geological situations, particularly those relevant to the mining industry. As a pioneer in representing geological features in three dimensions, Sopwith's models offer a unique perspective into the geological past and the forces that continue to shape our planet. This studio shot serves as a testament to the enduring value of Sopwith's work in geology and geomorphology.
