Sopwith Model VIII: Overcutting of strata
This model shows overcut strata: when the layers of rock are inclined at a gentler angle than the eroded slope, the resulting vee pattern points uphill. Thomas Sopwith (1803 - 1879) was an eminent geologist and civil engineer who pioneered methods of representing geological features. This set of wooden models were designed to represent geological situations with faults, folds, inclines and strata that were particularly relevant to the mining industry

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a Sopwith Model VIII, a wooden geological model created by the renowned 19th century geologist and civil engineer, Thomas Sopwith (1803-1879). The intricately carved model illustrates the geological phenomenon of overcutting of strata, where the layers of rock are inclined at a gentler angle than the eroded slope, resulting in a distinctive vee-shaped pattern that points uphill. Sopwith's models were instrumental in the education and advancement of geology and geomorphology during the Victorian era. They were particularly relevant to the mining industry, providing a three-dimensional representation of complex geological situations, including faults, folds, inclines, and strata. The model, set against a pristine white background, showcases the intricacies of denudation and erosion, with the eroded layers revealing the underlying stratification. The wooden model, with its meticulously carved layers, offers a unique perspective on the historical geological concepts of the 19th century. Thomas Sopwith's pioneering work in geology and geological modeling revolutionized the way geological features were represented and understood. This photograph is a testament to the enduring significance of his work and the continued importance of visual aids in geological education and research.
