Spinal vertebrae

Spinal vertebrae. Historical artwork of vertebrae (spinal bones) seen from the side. The rear of the spine is at right. Four vertebrae are seen here. The blocks of bone at left bear most of the weight that is supported by the spine. The spine is cushioned by discs of cartilage between each vertebra (the cartilage is not shown here, only the spaces are shown). The projecting bits of bone at right are the processes of each vertebra, and are where the back ligaments and muscles attach to the spine. The spinal cord (not shown here) runs at right of the vertebral blocks, in a space called the vertebral canal. The main spinal column contains 24 vertebrae. These are thoracic (chest) vertebrae

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork from Science Photo Library showcases a print of spinal vertebrae, providing a fascinating glimpse into the intricate anatomy of the human body. The image captures four vertebrae seen from the side, with the rear of the spine positioned on the right. These bony blocks at left bear most of the weight that is supported by our spines, emphasizing their crucial role in maintaining our upright posture. Although not depicted in this illustration, discs of cartilage between each vertebra act as cushions to protect and support the spine. On the right side of each vertebra, we can observe projecting bits of bone known as processes. These serve as attachment points for back ligaments and muscles, highlighting their importance in providing stability and facilitating movement. The vertebral canal running alongside these vertebral blocks houses the spinal cord (not shown here), which plays a vital role in transmitting signals between our brain and body. It's worth noting that this print only displays thoracic (chest) vertebrae; however, it's important to acknowledge that our main spinal column consists of 24 vertebrae altogether. This historical artwork offers an intriguing insight into both biology and anatomy while showcasing how beautifully complex our skeletal system truly is.
