Haematopoietic stem cells, SEM C013 / 5009

Haematopoietic stem cells, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Stem cells can differentiate into any other cell type. There are three main types of stem cell in mammals: embryonic stem cells, derived from blastocysts; adult stem cells, which are found in some adult tissues; and cord blood stem cells, which are found in the umbilical cord. These cells are destined to become blood cells. During blood cell development in adults, stem cells develop through a process known as haemopoiesis. Blood cells, which have short lifespans, are constantly produced by the bone marrow

A2 Poster (59.4 x 42cm, 23.4" x 16.5" inches) printed on 170gsm Satin Poster Paper. Securely packaged, rolled and inserted into a strong mailing tube and shipped tracked. Poster Prints are of comparable archival quality to our Photographic prints, they are simply printed on thinner Poster Paper. Whilst we only use Photographic Prints in our frames, you can frame Poster Prints if they are carefully supported to prevent sagging over time.

Poster prints are budget friendly enlarged prints in standard poster paper sizes (A0, A1, A2, A3 etc). Whilst poster paper is sometimes thinner and less durable than our other paper types, they are still ok for framing and should last many years. Our Archival Quality Photo Prints and Fine Art Paper Prints are printed on higher quality paper and the choice of which largely depends on your budget.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases haematopoietic stem cells, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and enhanced with false coloring. These remarkable cells possess the extraordinary ability to differentiate into any other type of cell in the body. In mammals, there are three main types of stem cells: embryonic stem cells derived from blastocysts, adult stem cells found in select tissues, and cord blood stem cells sourced from the umbilical cord. The featured haematopoietic stem cells have a specific destiny – they are destined to become blood cells. In adults, these versatile stem cells undergo a process called haemopoiesis as they develop into various types of blood cells. This continuous production is crucial since blood cells have relatively short lifespans. The intricate details captured by this SEM image provide insight into the biology and genetics behind these unspecialized yet highly potent cellular entities. The vibrant orange hue adds an artistic touch while highlighting their vital role in maintaining our overall health. It is important to note that this photograph is courtesy of Science Photo Library and should not be used for commercial purposes without proper authorization. Nonetheless, it serves as a visual reminder of the incredible complexity and potential held within these microscopic powerhouses known as haematopoietic stem cells.
