Heart valve. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of the aortic valve (bottom centre). It lies between the left ventricle of the heart and the aortic arch and consists of a fibrous annulus (ring) which has three semilunar pockets attached to it. In the diastole phase the aortic valve is closed maintaining the aortic column of blood at a roughly constant pressure. In ventricular sistole the blood pressure in the left ventricle rises rapidly and when it is higher than the aortic pressure the aortic valve opens. This print showcases a false-colour scanning electron micrograph of the aortic valve, located at the bottom center. Serving as a vital component between the left ventricle of the heart and the aortic arch, this intricate valve consists of a fibrous annulus or ring with three semilunar pockets attached to it. During diastole phase, when the heart is relaxed, the aortic valve remains closed to maintain constant pressure in the column of blood within the aorta. However, during ventricular systole - when there is contraction in the left ventricle - blood pressure rapidly rises. Once it surpasses that of the aortic pressure, an extraordinary mechanism unfolds: The tightly sealed aortic valve opens up like an elegant gateway for blood flow into systemic circulation.
