Keplers cosmological model, artwork

Keplers cosmological model. Historical artwork by the German astronomer and mathematician Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) that demonstrates the relative distances of the planets from the sun in the Copernican system. Copernicus system, a revolutionary new heliocentric (sun-centred) theory, had been published in 1543, the year of his death. Initially it caused little controversy but Kepler became an advocate and published a supporting work, The Cosmographic Mystery (1597), in which this illustration was published. The work put forward the idea that the distances of the planets from the Sun were determined by the five regular solids seen here, if one supposed that a planets orbit was circumscribed about one solid and inscribed in another

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Johannes Kepler's groundbreaking cosmological model, a true masterpiece of 16th-century artwork. Created by the German astronomer and mathematician himself, this historical illustration beautifully depicts the relative distances of planets from the sun in the Copernican system. Kepler's work was inspired by Nicolaus Copernicus' revolutionary heliocentric theory, which proposed that the sun is at the center of our solar system. While initially met with little controversy upon its publication in 1543, Kepler became a fervent advocate for this new perspective on celestial bodies. In his influential book "The Cosmographic Mystery" published in 1597, Kepler presented this very illustration to support his idea that planetary orbits are determined by five regular solids. Each planet's orbit is imagined as being circumscribed about one solid and inscribed within another. This sepia-toned monochrome drawing not only serves as an artistic marvel but also represents a significant milestone in our understanding of cosmology. It symbolizes how science continuously evolves through history and challenges existing beliefs. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing piece, we are reminded of Kepler's immense contribution to astrophysics and planetary science during the 1500s. This print transports us back to a time when scientific discoveries were made through meticulous observation and imaginative interpretation. Science Photo Library has expertly captured every intricate detail of Keplers' cosmological model, allowing us to appreciate both its aesthetic beauty and scientific significance.
