Ebola virus, TEM

Ebola virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the extrusion (release) of an Ebola virus (red) from a host cell (green). This filovirus, which causes Ebola fever, removes part of the host cell membrane (pink/blue, centre) as it leaves, ensuring that the hosts defences do not recognise it as foreign. Ebola is contracted by handling material from infected animals, or through contact with the body fluids of infected patients. It causes a fever, severe haemorrhaging and central nervous system damage. There is no cure, but most victims recover if given good supportive therapy. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the Ebola virus in all its intricate detail. The coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) captures the intense moment of extrusion, as the virus is released from a host cell. The Ebola virus, depicted in striking red, cunningly removes part of the host cell membrane (pink/blue) during its exit to avoid detection by the host's immune system. Ebola fever, caused by this filovirus, is a devastating illness that brings about severe haemorrhaging and damage to the central nervous system. Contracted through contact with infected animals or patients' body fluids, it poses a significant threat to human health. This image serves as a reminder of both the infectious nature and complexity of this pathogen. While there is currently no cure for Ebola, victims have shown promising recovery rates when provided with good supportive therapy. Understanding the structure and behavior of viruses like Ebola is crucial for developing effective treatments and preventive measures. The magnification level remains unknown but doesn't diminish our awe at witnessing such microscopic marvels through advanced scientific techniques like TEM imaging. This photograph not only highlights key aspects of virology but also emphasizes how biology intersects with medicine in combating emerging diseases. Science Photo Library continues to contribute invaluable visual resources that aid researchers and educators alike in their pursuit of knowledge about pathogens like Ebola and their impact on global health.
