Coloured SEM of a monocyte in a blood capillary
Monocyte. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a monocyte (macrophage) in a blood capillary of the " zona reticularis" of the adrenal gland. The monocyte (yellow) is the largest type of white blood cell. Here it is passing through a porous capillary (violet) which has a red blood cell and blood platelets (yellow globules). Pro- truberances on the surface of the monocyte help it to move. The monocyte migrates into tissues to scavenge and engulf cellular debris and foreign micro-organisms. Monocytes thus play an important role in the initial phase of the bodys immune response. Magnification: x6, 000 at 6x7cm size. x8, 570 at 4x5"

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a monocyte, also known as a macrophage, in a blood capillary within the "zona reticularis" of the adrenal gland. The monocyte, depicted in yellow, is the largest type of white blood cell and plays an integral role in our body's immune response. In this image, we witness the monocyte passing through a porous capillary colored violet. Alongside it are red blood cells and yellow globules representing blood platelets. Notably, protruberances on the surface of the monocyte aid its movement through tissues. Monocytes possess remarkable scavenging abilities as they migrate into tissues to engulf cellular debris and foreign micro-organisms. This crucial function makes them vital players in initiating our body's immune defense mechanism. The magnification used for this SEM is x6,000 at 6x7cm size or x8,570 at 4x5". By capturing such intricate details with precision and clarity, Science Photo Library provides us with an awe-inspiring glimpse into the complex world within our own bodies. This photograph serves as both an educational tool for understanding human anatomy and immunology while also highlighting the beauty that lies hidden within us all.
