Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria

Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a sect- ion through Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria. These bacteria cause human tuberculosis (formerly called consumption). They are Gram-positive rod- shaped bacteria. If M. tuberculosis reaches the lungs from a cough or sneeze it will multiply to form a primary tubercle (localized bacterial colony). The bacteria then either spread through the lymphatic system to other parts of the body, which can be fatal, or lie dormant, only becoming active again years later. Treatment is with antibiotics. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a coloured transmission electron micrograph of Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria, the culprits behind human tuberculosis. These Gram-positive rod-shaped bacteria are responsible for causing this respiratory disease, which was previously known as consumption. The image provides a detailed section through these bacterial colonies, revealing their intricate structure and features. When M. tuberculosis enters the lungs through coughing or sneezing, it rapidly multiplies to form primary tubercles – localized bacterial colonies within the lung tissue. From here, the bacteria can take two paths: they may spread throughout the body via the lymphatic system, posing a grave threat to various organs and potentially leading to fatal consequences; alternatively, they may enter a dormant state only to reactivate years later. The treatment for tuberculosis involves administering antibiotics that target these resilient bacteria. However, due to their ability to lie dormant and evade immune responses for extended periods of time, combating this infectious disease remains challenging. This remarkable photograph serves as an invaluable resource in bacteriology and microbiology research by providing scientists with an up-close look at Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Its magnification level is unknown but undoubtedly offers unprecedented insights into understanding how these microbes infect humans and cause such widespread health concerns worldwide.
