False-colour SEM of acini cells of the pancreas

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of acini cells of the pancreas. The pancreas is a major digestive gland, secreting both exocrine (digestive enzyme) & endocrine (insulin & glucagon hormone) products. The cells here are arranged in serous acini or clusters and produce exocrine secretions. Globules of these secretions are seen with the membrane of cells removed. Their enzyme products drain into a branched system of ducts of increasing size, that terminates in the main pancreatic duct, which feeds into the duodenum. A smaller proportion of cells (here hidden) secrete hormones. Magnification: x900 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x1, 400 at 4x5 inch size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of acini cells in the pancreas. The pancreas, known as a vital digestive gland, plays a crucial role in our body's functioning by secreting both exocrine and endocrine products. In this image, we observe the arrangement of these specialized cells in serous acini or clusters that primarily produce exocrine secretions. The removal of cell membranes allows us to witness globules of these secretions within the acini cells. These enzyme products are then transported through an intricate network of branching ducts, gradually increasing in size until they reach the main pancreatic duct. Ultimately, this main duct delivers the enzymes into the duodenum for digestion purposes. Although not visible here due to their hidden nature, it is important to note that a smaller proportion of cells within the pancreas also secrete hormones such as insulin and glucagon. These hormones play critical roles in regulating blood sugar levels and overall metabolism. With its impressive magnification power at x900 (6x7cm size) or x1,400 (4x5 inch size), this false-colour SEM print provides us with an extraordinary glimpse into the microscopic world of human anatomy.
