Brain nausea reflex
Brain nausea reflex. Artwork of the location in the brain of the area responsible for the various nausea reflexes, and some of the causes. Part of the base of the brain (seen from the side, front of the brain at left) is seen at centre. Several coloured areas are seen in the brainstem, an area of the brain responsible for basic reflexes like breathing. Nausea can be triggered by (clockwise from upper right): smell (olfactory nerves shown), sight, pregnancy, bad food (sectioned stomach and duodenum shown), a brain tumour, or dizziness (the semicircular canals of the ear that give a sense of balance, are shown). The reflex, if triggered, provokes vomiting and emptying of the stomach

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork titled "Brain Nausea Reflex" provides a visual representation of the brain's role in triggering various nausea reflexes and explores some of their causes. At the center, we observe the base of the brain from a side view, showcasing several colored areas within the brainstem responsible for essential reflexes like breathing. The image highlights different factors that can induce nausea in a clockwise arrangement. Starting from the upper right corner, we see olfactory nerves representing smell as a potential trigger. Moving to sight, pregnancy is depicted with an illustration emphasizing its association with morning sickness. The presence of sectioned stomach and duodenum signifies bad food as another cause. Furthermore, this artwork portrays how a brain tumor or dizziness (illustrated by semicircular canals responsible for balance) can also lead to feelings of nausea. When any of these triggers activate the reflex, it provokes vomiting and emptying of the stomach. By combining elements from biology and anatomy, this illustration offers valuable insights into both physiological and psychological aspects related to nausea. It serves as an educational tool for understanding how our neural pathways respond to certain stimuli within our environment or internal conditions.
