Carduelis Caniceps, Grey-headed Goldfinch, Carduelis Spinoides, Yellow-breasted Greenfinch

Carduelis Caniceps, Grey-headed Goldfinch, Carduelis Spinoides, Yellow-breasted Greenfinch. Birds from the Himalaya Mountains, engraving 1831 by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould. John Gould was working as a taxidermist, he was known as the bird-stuffer, by the Zoological Society. Goulds fascination with birds from the east began in the late 1820s when a collection of birds from the Himalayan mountains arrived at the Societys museum and Gould conceived the idea of publishing a volume of imperial folio sized hand-coloured lithographs of the eighty species, with figures of a hundred birds. Elizabeth Gould made the drawings and transferred them to the large lithographic stones. They are called Gould plates

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of two bird species found in the Himalaya Mountains: the Carduelis Caniceps, also known as Grey-headed Goldfinch, and the Carduelis Spinoides, commonly referred to as Yellow-breasted Greenfinch. Engraved by Elizabeth Gould and John Gould in 1831, this artwork is a testament to their incredible talent and passion for ornithology. John Gould's fascination with birds from the east began when a collection of avian specimens arrived at the Zoological Society's museum in the late 1820s. Inspired by these exotic creatures, he conceived the idea of publishing an extraordinary volume featuring hand-colored lithographs of eighty different species. Elizabeth Gould meticulously made drawings of each bird which were then transferred onto large lithographic stones. The resulting prints became known as "Gould plates" and are highly regarded for their remarkable detail and vibrant colors. This particular image captures both birds perched on a branch, showcasing their distinct markings and unique features. The Grey-headed Goldfinch displays its elegant grey plumage while its companion, the Yellow-breasted Greenfinch, exhibits stunning yellow feathers on its chest. Dating back to early 19th century England, this illustration represents not only a significant contribution to natural history but also serves as a testament to British artistry during that period. Its intricate details invite viewers into a world filled with awe-inspiring avian wonders from distant lands. Quint Lox has beautifully captured this piece from Liszt Collection, preserving its historical significance for all admirers of nature's marvels.
