Simian rotavirus capsid, molecular model

Simian rotavirus capsid, molecular model. This virus is named for its ability to infect the higher primates (simians). Rotaviruses, transmitted by faecal-oral contact, cause severe diarrhoea in infants and the young. In viruses, the capsid is the protein shell that encloses the genetic material. A capsid consists of subunits called capsomeres that self-assemble to form the shell seen here. Here, this shell, approximately spherical in shape, has icosahedral symmetry. One of the functions of the capsid is to aid the transmission of the viral genetic material into host cells. The cell mechanisms are then used to produce new virus particles

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the molecular model of the Simian rotavirus capsid, a virus notorious for its ability to infect primates. The rotaviruses are primarily transmitted through faecal-oral contact and can cause severe diarrhoea in infants and young individuals. In this image, we observe the protein shell known as the capsid, which encloses the viral genetic material. Composed of self-assembling subunits called capsomeres, this spherical-shaped shell exhibits icosahedral symmetry. The main role of the capsid is to facilitate the transmission of viral genetic material into host cells. Once inside, cellular mechanisms are exploited by the virus to produce new particles. This intricate artwork not only sheds light on the structural aspects of this pathogenic agent but also highlights its significance in virology and molecular biology. With a white background accentuating its features, this illustration provides valuable insights into simian rotavirus's biomolecular composition and aids researchers in understanding its behavior within primate hosts. By studying proteins such as spike proteins within this macromolecule, scientists delve deeper into uncovering potential therapeutic targets against gastrointestinal diseases caused by these viruses. Science Photo Library has expertly captured both scientific accuracy and artistic appeal in presenting this visual representation of simian rotavirus's capsid structure. It serves as a reminder that even at microscopic levels, nature's complexity never fails to fascinate us with its intricacy and beauty.
