Jigsaw Puzzles from Science Photo Library
F. colour SEM of trabeculae in spongy bone tissue
Cancellous bone. False-colour scanning electron micrograph of trabeculae in cancellous (spongy) bone tissue. Bone tissue is divided into compact and cancellous. The latter fills the interior of bones and the cavities between the trabeculae are occupied by bone marrow. Trabeculae are thin and composed of irregular lamellae of bone with lacunae containing osteocytes. Some of these lacunae are visible as tiny dark depressions. Osteblasts are the cells responsible for bone formation. Once they cease activity and become embedded in bone matrix they are called osteocytes. Magnification: x36 at 6x7cm size. x60 at 4x5ins

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of trabeculae in cancellous (spongy) bone tissue. The false-color scanning electron micrograph reveals a mesmerizing world within our bones, where compact and cancellous tissues coexist. Cancellous bone fills the interior of bones, and it is in these cavities between the delicate trabeculae that we find bone marrow. The thin trabeculae are composed of irregular lamellae of bone, housing lacunae that contain osteocytes - specialized cells responsible for bone formation. As we observe this image closely, tiny dark depressions become visible, representing some of these lacunae. Magnified at x36 for a 6x7cm size or x60 for a 4x5ins size, this photograph offers us an unprecedented glimpse into the microscopic wonders hidden within our own bodies. It serves as a reminder of the complexity and intricacy that lies beneath our skin. Through scientific exploration and imaging techniques like this one captured by Science Photo Library, we gain deeper insights into human anatomy and physiology. This particular image highlights the remarkable structure and function of spongy bone tissue while showcasing its essential role in supporting our skeletal system. As we marvel at this extraordinary visual representation, let us appreciate both the artistry found within science itself and the incredible resilience and adaptability inherent to our own bodies.
