EDITORS COMMENTS
Slimy Golovach," a captivating image from the 1813 atlas published by the Russian Academy of Sciences, showcases the intriguing underwater world discovered during the historic circumnavigation voyage led by Captain Ivan Fyodorovich Kruzenshtern between 1803 and 1806. This atlas, one of the most extensive publications of engravings from tsarist Russia, includes maps of Kruzenshtern's route and 109 plates based on the drawings of V.G. Tilesius, the expedition's doctor, naturalist, and official artist. In this particular plate, Pavel Ivanovich Maslovskii masterfully captures the vibrant and mysterious aquatic life of the South and North Pacific. The title "Slimy Golovach" refers to a type of fish, likely a slimehead, with a distinctive, slimy head and elongated dorsal fin. The artist's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the fish's textured scales and the intricate patterns of its fins. Maslovskii's work is a testament to the rich natural history discoveries made during Kruzenshtern's expedition, which brought the Russian Empire closer to the meeting of frontiers between Europe and Asia. This image, along with the other plates in the atlas, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the beauty and diversity of the world's oceans and the intrepid spirit of exploration that drove the Russian expedition. This engraving, a part of the vast collection of the National Library of Russia, is a valuable piece of heritage art that continues to inspire curiosity and appreciation for the natural world and the history of exploration.
