CHELSEA AND WESTMINSTER HOSPITAL, FULHAM ROAD, KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA, GREATER LONDON. Health Secretary Virginia Bottomley signing a visitors book during a private visit to the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital site.
Also in this photograph is Sir William Doughty, Chairman of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority. Laing Management Contracting worked on the construction of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority between 1989 and 1993. The new teaching hospital was built on the site of the old St Stephens Hospital, which was demolished in the early months of 1989. The use of fast track construction techniques enabled the entire project to be completed in less than 5 years. The hospital was officially opened by the Queen on 13 May 1993

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of healthcare in Greater London. Health Secretary Virginia Bottomley is seen signing a visitors book during her private visit to the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital site, accompanied by Sir William Doughty, Chairman of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority. The hospital, constructed between 1989 and 1993 by Laing Management Contracting on behalf of the authority, replaced the old St Stephens Hospital which was demolished earlier that year. The use of fast track construction techniques allowed this remarkable project to be completed in less than five years. It stands as a testament to both architectural prowess and efficient teamwork. The significance of this event is further underscored by the presence of government officials and their active involvement in shaping healthcare infrastructure. The photograph not only showcases an important milestone but also highlights how public-private partnerships can bring about transformative change within communities. This image serves as a reminder that progress often requires collaboration between various stakeholders. Ultimately, it is through such endeavors that institutions like Chelsea and Westminster Hospital are able to provide quality care for generations to come. As we reflect on this moment captured in time, we recognize its historical value and appreciate those who contributed to its realization.
