Key ceremony JLP01_11_55225_07
CHELSEA AND WESTMINSTER HOSPITAL, FULHAM ROAD, KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA, GREATER LONDON. Representatives from Laing Management, North West Thames Regional Health Authority, and Riverside Health Authority at the handover ceremony for Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
Laing Management Contracting worked on the construction of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority between 1989 and 1993. The new teaching hospital was built on the site of the old St Stephens Hospital, which was demolished in the early months of 1989. The use of fast track construction techniques enabled the entire project to be completed in less than 5 years, and the hospital was officially opened by the Queen on 13 May 1993. In the photograph, the people holding a large cutout of a key are Brian Zelly, joint managing director of Laing Management and Pam Castro, director of estates for North West Thames Regional Health Authority, with another unnamed woman

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. The image showcases the key ceremony, where representatives from Laing Management, North West Thames Regional Health Authority, and Riverside Health Authority come together to mark the handover of this remarkable institution. Laing Management Contracting played a pivotal role in constructing Chelsea and Westminster Hospital between 1989 and 1993 on behalf of the North West Thames Regional Health Authority. This new teaching hospital was built on the site previously occupied by St Stephens Hospital, which was demolished earlier that year. Utilizing innovative fast track construction techniques, the project was completed in less than five years—an impressive feat for such an extensive undertaking. The grand opening took place on 13 May 1993 with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II officiating. In this photograph, we see Brian Zelly, joint managing director of Laing Management, proudly holding a large cutout key alongside Pam Castro, director of estates for North West Thames Regional Health Authority. Another unnamed woman completes this trio as they symbolically represent the transfer of responsibility for this state-of-the-art medical facility. Preserved within Historic England Archive's collection, this image serves as a testament to both architectural achievement and collaborative efforts that have positively impacted healthcare provision in Kensington and Chelsea boroughs throughout Greater London.
