EDITORS COMMENTS
Le 'Combattant Inconnu Britannique' or The Unknown British Soldier: A poignant moment in history captured in this photograph from 1920, taken at Westminster Abbey in London. King George V, dressed in formal attire, stands before the caskets of his two eldest sons, the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) and the Duke of York (later George VI), who had both lost their lives during the First World War. The fallen heroes were commemorated with full military honors, their coffins draped in British flags. The Unknown Soldier, an unidentified British serviceman killed in action, was also interred in a separate tomb nearby. This solemn event marked the end of the war and the beginning of a new era in Britain. The photograph, titled 'Le 'Combattant Inconnu Britannique; a Westminster: le roi George V et, derriere lui, ses fils, le prince de Galles et le duc d'York, devant le cercueil', was published in 'L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2' by Georges Bertin Scott in 1924. The image captures the somber mood of the occasion, with the King and his sons dressed in mourning attire, the falling leaves, and the solemn faces of the soldiers in the background. The photograph is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during the war and the unity of the British people in their grief.
