Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor, was a controversial figure in British history. Known for his abdication of the throne in order to marry American socialite Wallis Simpson, he faced criticism and scrutiny throughout his life. Despite this, he remained a beloved member of the royal family and dedicated much of his time to charitable causes. Born on June 23, 1894 as Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David, he was the eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary. He became king in January 1936 after his father's death but abdicated later that year to marry Simpson, who had been divorced twice. After stepping down from the throne, Prince Edward was given the title Duke of Windsor by his brother King George VI. He spent much of his life traveling and living abroad with Simpson before settling in France. Despite their controversial relationship and political implications surrounding their marriage, Prince Edward remained devoted to Wallis until her death in 1986. He passed away himself just a year later on May 28th at the age of 77. Though often remembered for scandalous events during his reign as king and subsequent years as Duke of Windsor, Prince Edward will always be an intriguing figure in British history - a man who chose love over duty and forever changed the course of monarchy.
