EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from a rare 1813 atlas published by the Russian Academy of Sciences, showcasing Japanese greeting rituals as depicted by Ivan Vasil'evich Chesky. The atlas, titled "Atlas of the Great Voyage Around the World by Order of His Imperial Majesty," was created following the historic circumnavigation expedition led by Captain Ivan Fyodorovich Kruzenshtern from 1803 to 1806. Chesky, a doctor, naturalist, and the official artist of the expedition, meticulously documented various aspects of the journey, including this intriguing depiction of Japanese men engaging in a formal greeting. The atlas includes 109 plates based on Chesky's drawings, making it one of the most extensive publications of engravings from tsarist Russia. The subjects range from geographical maps, such as those of Sakhalin, Kamchatka, and the Kurile Islands, to ethnographic representations of the Siberian natives and other peoples encountered during the voyage. This image offers a fascinating glimpse into the cultural practices of Japan during the early 19th century. The men are shown bowing deeply, displaying respect and deference to each other. The scene exudes a sense of tradition and formality, offering a captivating insight into the meeting of different frontiers and the rich cultural heritage of the time.
