Tilesius, a doctor, naturalist, and the official artist of the expedition. It is one of the largest publications of engravings from tsarist Russia. EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration is by Russian artist Jegor Skotnikoff, taken from the atlas "Voyage Autour du Monde Exécuté par Ordre de S.M.L.C.I.M. et C.S.M.I.K.R. Impériale de Russie" (Voyage Around the World Executed by Order of His Imperial Majesty and His Imperial Highness the Grand Duke Constantine Pavlovich of Russia), published by the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1813. The atlas was based on the drawings of V.G. Tilesius, a doctor, naturalist, and official artist of the 1803-06 circumnavigation expedition led by Captain Ivan Fyodorovich Kruzenshtern. The illustration depicts a Japanese sentry house from the expedition's travels in the Far East. The sentry, dressed in traditional Japanese clothing, is shown kneeling in front of the house, possibly in a guard position. The house, with its thatched roof and wooden walls, is a typical example of Japanese architecture from the early 19th century. The intricate details of the building, including the latticework and decorative elements, are beautifully rendered in the engraving. This illustration is a fascinating glimpse into the meeting of cultures during the age of exploration and the rich heritage of both Russian and Japanese art. The atlas, with its 109 plates, is a testament to the historic voyage around the world and the artistic achievements of the time.
