EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration is a testament to the rich cultural encounters during the historic circumnavigation voyage led by Captain Ivan Fyodorovich Kruzenshtern from 1803 to 1806. The Russian Academy of Sciences published this atlas in 1813, featuring 109 plates based on the drawings of V.G. Tilesius, the expedition's doctor, naturalist, and official artist. This particular plate, created by Jegor Skotnikoff, showcases an Ainu man from Esso Island. The Ainu are an indigenous people originally inhabiting the northern parts of Japan, Sakhalin, and the Kurile Islands. The man is depicted wearing traditional apparel, including a fur coat and a headdress adorned with feathers. His facial hair is long and thick, and his expression is one of quiet introspection. The illustration provides a glimpse into the meeting of frontiers between European exploration and indigenous cultures. It is a significant piece of ethnographic and historical documentation, showcasing the diversity and heritage of the peoples encountered during Kruzenshtern's voyage. The engraving, with its intricate details and fine lettering, is a testament to the artistic skill of Jegor Skotnikoff and the importance of this atlas in the annals of Russian and world exploration history.
