Henry III, (1207-1272), c1787

Henry III, (1207-1272), c1787. Also known as Henry of Winchester, was King of England, Lord of Ireland and Duke of Aquitaine from 1216 until his death. Henry assumed the throne when he was only nine. He extracted huge sums of money from the Jews in England, ultimately crippling their ability to do business, and as attitudes towards the Jews hardened, he introduced the Statute of Jewry, attempting to segregate the community. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Henry III, the influential ruler of England from 1207 to 1272. Also known as Henry of Winchester, he ascended to the throne at a tender age of nine, making him one of the youngest monarchs in history. Despite his youth, Henry proved himself to be a formidable leader who left an indelible mark on English history. One notable aspect of Henry's reign was his strained relationship with the Jewish community in England. Desperate for funds, he extracted exorbitant sums from them, severely hampering their ability to conduct business and ultimately leading to their financial ruin. As anti-Semitic sentiments grew stronger during this period, Henry introduced the Statute of Jewry in an attempt to segregate and marginalize this community. The portrait captured in this print portrays King Henry III with a direct gaze that reflects both strength and determination. The image is rendered in monochrome black and white tones, adding a sense of timelessness and gravitas. This historical artifact originates from "A New Universal and Impartial History of England" by George Frederick Raymond published around 1787. It serves as a valuable testament not only to the life and reign of King Henry III but also sheds light on societal attitudes towards religion during that era.
