EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures Cecil Rhodes, the British-born South African financier, statesman, and empire builder in 1891. Known for his immense wealth acquired from the Kimberley diamond mines and his establishment of De Beers Consolidated Mines in 1888, Rhodes was a prominent figure in both industry and politics. As the Managing Director of the British South Africa Company, he governed a vast territory that would later become modern-day Zimbabwe. Rhodes also served as Prime Minister of the Cape Colony until his resignation in 1896 due to his involvement in instigating the Jameson Raid into the Transvaal. Rhodes' influence extended beyond business and politics. In an act of philanthropy, he left funds to establish the prestigious Rhodes Scholarships at Oxford University for German and American students. This legacy continues to provide educational opportunities for promising individuals today. The artist behind this lithograph is Spy (Leslie Ward), who skillfully captured Rhodes' profile with hands on hips - a stance reflecting confidence and authority. The vibrant colors bring out every detail of his distinguished attire. This print not only showcases Cecil Rhodes as a significant historical figure but also represents themes such as colonialism, imperialism, entrepreneurship, and education. It serves as a reminder of an era when powerful men shaped nations while leaving lasting legacies behind them.
