Book of Hours (Use of Rouen): fol. 53r, c. 1470. In the late 1400s and early 1500s Rouen was an established and important center of book production. The citys cathedral had a wealthy chapter that spent large sums of money to commission books and to maintain its extensive library. The stationers and booksellers would have likely been concentrated in or near the cathedral precinct. This artist, named after a manuscript now in Geneva, was Rouens principal illuminator during the second half of the 1400s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a page from the Book of Hours (Use of Rouen), specifically folio 53r, created around 1470 by the talented Master of the Geneva Latini. During this period, Rouen emerged as a prominent hub for book production, with its cathedral serving as a significant patron and custodian of an extensive library. The illuminated manuscript on display exemplifies the exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail characteristic of this era. The artist's intricate brushwork, employing gold leaf accents and vibrant pigments made from ink and tempera, brings to life scenes that adorn the velvety vellum pages. The subject matter depicted in this particular folio remains a mystery without further context. However, it is worth noting that each page within a Book of Hours typically contained prayers or devotional texts intended for private use during specific times throughout the day. As we delve into this mesmerizing artwork, we are transported back in time to witness not only the artistic brilliance but also gain insights into medieval religious practices and cultural traditions prevalent in France during this period. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection today, this remarkable piece serves as an invaluable testament to both Rouen's rich history as a center for book production and the enduring legacy left behind by skilled illuminators like Master of the Geneva Latini.
