Book of Hours (Use of Rouen): fol. 24r, c. 1470. In the late 1400s and early 1500s Rouen was an established and important center of book production. The citys cathedral had a wealthy chapter that spent large sums of money to commission books and to maintain its extensive library. The stationers and booksellers would have likely been concentrated in or near the cathedral precinct. This artist, named after a manuscript now in Geneva, was Rouens principal illuminator during the second half of the 1400s

This print showcases a page from the Book of Hours (Use of Rouen), specifically fol. 24r, dating back to around 1470. Created by the talented Master of the Geneva Latini, a renowned French illuminator active in Rouen during the late 15th century, this exquisite manuscript exemplifies the city's prominence as a hub for book production at that time. Rouen boasted an influential cathedral with a prosperous chapter that spared no expense when it came to commissioning books and maintaining an extensive library. The stationers and booksellers likely thrived in close proximity to this magnificent religious site. The image itself is rendered on vellum using ink, tempera, and gold accents - a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship employed by its creator. Every stroke reveals intricate details and vibrant colors that bring life to each element depicted within this historical masterpiece. Preserved within The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection, this photograph allows us to appreciate not only the artistic prowess of the Master of Geneva Latini but also offers insight into Rouen's cultural significance during this period. It serves as a window into an era where illuminated manuscripts were treasured objects representing both religious devotion and artistic excellence.
