Book of Hours (Use of Rouen): fol. 132r, c. 1470. In the late 1400s and early 1500s Rouen was an established and important center of book production. The citys cathedral had a wealthy chapter that spent large sums of money to commission books and to maintain its extensive library. The stationers and booksellers would have likely been concentrated in or near the cathedral precinct. This artist, named after a manuscript now in Geneva, was Rouens principal illuminator during the second half of the 1400s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a page from the Book of Hours (Use of Rouen), specifically folio 132r, created around 1470 by the Master of the Geneva Latini. During this period, Rouen emerged as a prominent hub for book production and held great significance in maintaining an extensive library within its cathedral. The wealthy chapter of the cathedral invested substantial funds in commissioning books, attracting stationers and booksellers to set up shop nearby. The artist behind this masterpiece, known as the Master of the Geneva Latini due to a manuscript now housed in Geneva, was considered Rouen's primary illuminator during the latter half of the 15th century. This particular artwork is rendered on vellum using ink, tempera, and gold accents - showcasing exquisite craftsmanship that was characteristic of French manuscripts. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this print allows us to appreciate not only the artistic prowess but also offers a glimpse into medieval religious practices. The Book of Hours served as a devotional text used by laypeople for private prayer and reflection throughout their day. Its intricate illustrations and calligraphy were designed to inspire devotion and facilitate spiritual contemplation. Through this image captured by Heritage Art/Heritage Images, we are transported back in time to witness both the cultural importance placed on book production in Rouen during this era and marvel at the skillful artistry that has stood strong through centuries.
