Common dewberry pollen, SEM

Common dewberry pollen grains. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of pollen grains from the common dewberry (Rubus flagellaris). The characteristic outer wall, or exine, of pollen grains is used by botanists to recognise and classify plants. Each pollen grain contains a male gamete (reproductive cell) that is intended to fertilise an egg or ovule (female gamete), and initiate the formation of a seed for a new plant. The dewberry is the trailing vine form of the blackberry. It is found throughout the Northern hemisphere. Magnification: x2800 when printed at 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of common dewberry pollen grains. The coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the characteristic outer wall, or exine, which is crucial for botanists in identifying and classifying plants. Each grain contains a male gamete, a reproductive cell responsible for fertilizing an egg or ovule and initiating seed formation. The common dewberry, known as the trailing vine form of blackberry, can be found across the Northern hemisphere. This SEM image magnified at x2800 when printed at 10 centimeters wide allows us to appreciate the sculpted details of these biological structures. The false colouring technique used enhances our understanding of pollen dispersal mechanisms and highlights their significance in plant reproduction. Through this mesmerizing snapshot captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of nature's intricate processes that enable new life to flourish. This photograph serves as a testament to both the artistry and scientific value inherent in botanical research. It invites us to marvel at the hidden wonders within even seemingly ordinary elements like pollen grains while emphasizing their vital role in sustaining our natural world.
