EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from the Vienna Codex of the Golden Bull, an illuminated manuscript prepared for King Wenceslas IV of Bohemia in 1365. The scene depicted is the Rites of Convocation of the Holy Roman Emperor, a grand ceremony marking the imperial election. The electors, including the Elector of Brandenburg, are seen bringing their mandates to the Emperor Charles IV, symbolizing their loyalty and commitment to the imperial cause. The Elector of Brandenburg performs the ritual washing of his hands in a silver bowl, signifying purification before the imperial audience. Four silver bowls, filled with food, are presented to the Emperor by the Count Palatine, representing the grand marshal of Saxony. The bearer of the imperial arch and the caparisoned horse add to the regal atmosphere of the event. The Emperor, seated on his throne, receives the electoral mandate from a messenger, while his empress looks on approvingly. The scene is further adorned with cupbearers offering wine and water to the Emperor and his guests. The intricate details of the clothing and accessories of the figures, as well as the richly decorated surroundings, are beautifully captured in this handcoloured copperplate engraving by Migliavacca, from Giulio Ferrario's Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World. This historical illustration offers a fascinating glimpse into the grandeur and ceremony of medieval imperial elections.
