EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts a series of miniatures from the Vienna Codex of the Golden Bull, an illuminated manuscript commissioned by King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia in 1365. The Golden Bull was an important document granting various privileges and autonomy to the electors of the Holy Roman Empire. The first image showcases King Wenceslaus of Bohemia riding alongside the Archbishop of Mainz, the Bishops of Bamberg and Wurtzburg, and citizens of Frankfurt on horseback. The Archbishop of Mainz is prominently displayed in the second miniature, wearing his mitre and holding a sword and banner. The third miniature features Emperor Charles IV of the Holy Roman Empire seated on his throne, holding a sceptre and orb. Surrounding him are the Archbishops of Trier, Cologne, and Mainz, all dressed in their ecclesiastical robes. The grandeur and opulence of the scene are evident in the intricate details of the clothing, the ornate thrones, and the regal bearing of the figures. This historical illustration, created by Migliavacca for Giulio Ferrario's Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World, published in Florence in 1844, offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and political landscape of the late medieval period. The meticulously handcoloured engraving captures the essence of the era, transporting us back in time to an age of grandeur, power, and splendour.
