Sleeping sickness parasite
Sleeping sickness. Artwork of a trypanosome (Trypanosoma brucei) moving past human red blood cells in the blood. This protozoan is the cause of sleeping sickness (African trypanosomiasis). It is a vector-borne parasite transmitted by blood- sucking tsetse flies (Glossina sp.). This life stage, the trypomastigote, lives in the bloodstream of the human host, reproducing asexually. It causes a recurring fever, enlarged lymph nodes, joint pain, weight loss and insomnia. Without drug treatment, the disease is usually fatal. The identical-looking trypomastigotes of T. cruzi are found in the blood of people with Chagas disease (American trypanosomiasis)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the intricate world of a sleeping sickness parasite, known as Trypanosoma brucei. In this magnified image, we witness the relentless movement of these tiny protozoans through human red blood cells within the bloodstream. The African trypanosomiasis, commonly referred to as sleeping sickness, is caused by this vector-borne parasite transmitted via blood-sucking tsetse flies. The trypomastigote stage of T. brucei resides in its human host's bloodstream and reproduces asexually. However, its presence brings forth debilitating symptoms such as recurring fever, joint pain, enlarged lymph nodes, weight loss, and insomnia. Without proper drug treatment intervention, this disease often proves fatal. Interestingly enough, T. cruzi - responsible for Chagas disease (American trypanosomiasis) - bears an uncanny resemblance to T. brucei's trypomastigotes when observed under microscopic examination. This mesmerizing illustration not only sheds light on the pathology behind sleeping sickness but also serves as a reminder of the profound impact that parasitical diseases can have on our health and well-being. It underscores the crucial role played by medical research in understanding and combating such conditions. Science Photo Library has once again captured both scientific precision and artistic beauty with this print – an extraordinary fusion that invites us into the fascinating realm of microorganisms shaping our lives and healthcare practices today.
