Coloured SEM of red blood cells, rouleau formation

Red blood cells. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of red blood cells in rouleau formation. They often stack together in this way because of their shape. Red blood cells are the most abundant type of cell in human blood, accounting for 40% of blood volume. Each cubic millimetre of blood contains around five million of these flexible disc-shaped cells. The red colour comes from the protein haemoglobin, which picks up oxygen in the lungs and distributes it around the body. Because the cells have no nucleus and are subjected to constant physical pounding, they last only four months before being destroyed & broken down. Magnification: x3000 at 5x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of red blood cells in rouleau formation. Through a coloured scanning electron micrograph, we can witness these vital cells stacking together due to their unique shape. Red blood cells are incredibly abundant in human blood, constituting 40% of its volume. In just one cubic millimeter of blood, approximately five million flexible disc-shaped cells can be found. The vibrant red hue that characterizes these cells is attributed to the presence of haemoglobin, a protein responsible for picking up oxygen from the lungs and distributing it throughout the body. However, despite their crucial role in oxygen transportation, red blood cells have a relatively short lifespan of only four months before they are broken down and destroyed due to constant physical pounding. At a magnification level of x3000 on a 5x7cm size print, this image allows us to appreciate the intricate details and delicate structure of these essential components within our bodies. It serves as a reminder of the remarkable complexity present within even the tiniest units that make up our anatomy.
