Illustration of blood cells & fibrin in a thrombus
Thrombus. Illustration of a thrombus, an abnormal blood clot formed inside a vein or artery. Red blood cells appear trapped inside a network of fibres of the insoluble protein fibrin. Also visible are platelets (lower left and upper right), small blood cells that trigger the clotting process. Thrombi form inside intact blood vessels due to an abnormal increase in clotting tendency of the blood. This is most often caused by atherosclerosis, where fatty deposits build up on the inside walls of blood vessels. Thrombi can grow to block blood vessels or break off and be carried through the circulation to the brain or lungs, with potentially fatal results

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate world of blood cells and fibrin in a thrombus, an abnormal blood clot formed inside a vein or artery. The image vividly captures red blood cells seemingly trapped within a complex network of fibres made up of the insoluble protein fibrin. Platelets, small blood cells responsible for initiating the clotting process, are also visible in the lower left and upper right corners. Thrombi emerge within intact blood vessels due to an abnormal increase in the clotting tendency of the blood. This heightened risk is often associated with atherosclerosis, where fatty deposits accumulate on the inner walls of these vital conduits. If left unchecked, thrombi can grow large enough to obstruct crucial passageways or detach and travel through circulation to critical organs like the brain or lungs, potentially leading to fatal consequences. The mesmerizing artwork not only serves as a visual representation but also offers valuable insights into this disease condition that affects millions worldwide. It highlights both medical professionals' ongoing efforts and patients' struggles against vascular disorders such as thrombosis and embolus formation. Science Photo Library's dedication to capturing scientific marvels shines through this exceptional piece—showcasing their commitment to advancing knowledge in medicine while providing invaluable resources for healthcare practitioners seeking deeper understanding into conditions related to blood clots, fibrin networks, and overall cardiovascular health.
