This atlas, published by the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1813, includes maps of Kruzenshtern's route and 109 plates based upon the drawings of V. G. Tilesius, a doctor, naturalist, and the official artist of the expedition. It is one of the largest publications of engravings from tsarist Russia. The subjects depicted include views of Sakhalin, Kamchatka, and the Kurile Islands; representations of Siberian natives and other peoples encountered during the voyage; and local fish and birds from throughout the South and North Pacific

View of the Camoes Grotto in Mr. Drummond's Garden,

EDITORS COMMENTS
an exquisite engraving by Ivan Vasil'evich Chesky, is a captivating image taken from the atlas "Atlas of the Great Voyages," published by the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1813. This remarkable publication, which includes maps of Captain I.F. Kruzenshtern's groundbreaking 1803-06 circumnavigation route and 109 plates based on the drawings of V.G. Tilesius, is a testament to the rich cultural and historical heritage of tsarist Russia. The present image showcases the picturesque Camoes Grotto, located in Mr. Drummond's Garden in Macao (now known as Macau), a Portuguese territory in China. The grotto, named after the famous Portuguese poet Luis de Camoes, is a serene and enchanting landscape, featuring a tranquil pool surrounded by lush vegetation and a stone bench where two figures, possibly European travelers, are seen deep in conversation. The intricate details of the engraving, from the delicate foliage to the meticulously rendered figures, evoke a sense of wonder and curiosity about the far-off lands explored during Kruzenshtern's voyage. The image, with its crisp lines and elegant lettering, is a visual representation of the meeting of frontiers between different cultures and the spirit of exploration that characterized the 19th century. This work of art, created by Ivan Vasil'evich Chesky, continues to inspire and intrigue viewers, offering a glimpse into the past and the rich tapestry of human history.
