Glass Frame : SEM of fat cells
Mounted Prints from Science Photo Library
SEM of fat cells
Adipose tissue. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph (SEM) of the large fat cells that make up adipose connective tissue. The round cells (green) are known as adipocytes. They are supported by connective tissue fibres (pink). Adipocytes are one of the largest cell types in the human body, each cell being 100 to 120 microns in diameter. Almost the entire volume of each adipocyte is occupied by a single lipid droplet. Adipose connective tissue forms a thick layer under the skin. It functions as an insulating layer and energy store. Magnification: x360 at 6x4.5cm size. Magnification; x380 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of adipose tissue, commonly known as fat cells. The image, captured through a coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM), reveals the large and round adipocytes that compose this connective tissue. Adipocytes, depicted in vibrant green hues, are among the largest cell types found in the human body, measuring 100 to 120 microns in diameter. Supported by delicate connective tissue fibres portrayed in soft pink tones, these adipocytes play crucial roles within our bodies. Apart from forming a thick layer beneath our skin, they serve as both an insulating layer and an energy storehouse. Interestingly, almost the entire volume of each adipocyte is occupied by a single lipid droplet—a fascinating detail highlighted by this SEM image. The magnification level employed for this photograph further enhances its visual impact. At x360 magnification for prints sized 6x4.5cm and x380 magnification for prints sized 6x7cm respectively, viewers can truly appreciate the intricate details and structures present within adipose connective tissue. This extraordinary image not only provides valuable insights into human anatomy but also serves as a testament to the remarkable capabilities of scientific imaging techniques. Science Photo Library has once again delivered an awe-inspiring piece that invites us to marvel at nature's complexity on a microscopic scale.
