EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment when The Flying Scotsman, a preserved LNER Gresley pacific 4472 locomotive, arrived in Liverpool, England from San Francisco. Taken on a bright freezing snowy day in February 1973 at Liverpool Docks, the image showcases the iconic steam engine aboard the MV California Star. After its arrival, The Flying Scotsman embarked on a journey to BR Derby for an overhaul before returning to passenger-hauling service in July of that year on the Torbay Steam Railway. By September, it was proudly hauling special excursions over BR mainline tracks once again. Designed by Sir Herbert Nigel Gresley, The Flying Scotsman is renowned as an express passenger train service operating between Edinburgh and London via the East Coast Main Line. Its illustrious history dates back to 1862 when it first commenced operations under this name. A significant milestone occurred on May 1st, 1928 when this very locomotive made history by hauling the inaugural non-stop train from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh—a remarkable feat covering 392 miles (631 km) without any stops. This achievement set a record at that time for a scheduled service.
