The Flying Scotsman returned to passenger-hauling service in July 1973 on the Torbay Steam Railway, and returned to hauling special excursions over BR mainline tracks in September of that year.
The Flying Scotsman, designed by Sir Herbert Nigel Gresley, is an express passenger train service that has operated between Edinburgh and London, the capitals of Scotland and England, via the East Coast Main Line. The service began in 1862; the name was officially adopted in 1924.
On 1st May 1928 The A1 class locomotive 4472 Flying Scotsman hauled the inaugural non-stop train from London Kings Cross to Edinburgh. 392 miles (631 km) without stopping, a record at the time for a scheduled service.

This print captures the iconic Flying Scotsman as it returns home from its historic journey in America. The locomotive is seen here at Chinley, Derbyshire, enroute to British Rail Derby for a much-needed overhaul on 19th February 1973. After its return from America, the Flying Scotsman regained its place in passenger-hauling service and embarked on new adventures.
