TEM of Chlamydia sp. spherical bacteria

False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the spherical bacteria Chlamydia sp. (orange) a genus of virus-like microorganisms that cause disease in man & birds. Unlike most bacteria Chlamydia lives & grows inside cells. Chlamydia trachomatis is reponsible for some 50% of cases of non-specific urethritis (NSU) in the U.K. (which if untreated may lead to serious pelvic inflammatory disease in women, possibly leading to sterility). When diagnosed early, Chlamydia is easily treated with a course of antibiotics tetracycline or erythromycin. Magnification: X 17, 600 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Chlamydia sp. , a genus of virus-like microorganisms responsible for causing diseases in both humans and birds. The spherical bacteria, depicted in vibrant orange hues, possess a unique characteristic that sets them apart from most other bacteria - they live and thrive inside cells. Chlamydia trachomatis, one species within this genus, accounts for approximately 50% of cases related to non-specific urethritis (NSU) in the United Kingdom. If left untreated, NSU can progress into serious pelvic inflammatory disease among women, potentially leading to infertility issues. However, when diagnosed early on, Chlamydia infections are easily treatable with antibiotics such as tetracycline or erythromycin. With an impressive magnification level of X 17,600 at 35mm size captured through TEM imaging techniques by Science Photo Library's skilled photographers and scientists specializing in bacteriology and microbiology fields; this image provides valuable insights into the intricate world of bacterial organisms. It serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding these microscopic creatures that have significant impacts on human health. This visually stunning photograph not only highlights the beauty found within nature's smallest creations but also emphasizes the need for continued research and advancements in combating venereal diseases like Chlamydia sp.
