Comet Lovejoy at dawn
Comet Lovejoy at dawn over the Southern Ocean. At upper right is part of the Milky Way, the band of billions of stars that is our galaxy seen from the inside. Comets are icy bodies from the outer solar system that boil and form a bright tail of gas and dust as they approach the Sun. Comet Lovejoy reached its closest approach to the Sun on 16 December 2011. Photographed on 23 December 2011 from Cape Schanck, on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print captures the mesmerizing beauty of Comet Lovejoy at dawn, as it illuminates the sky over the Southern Ocean. The image showcases a stunning celestial spectacle, with part of the Milky Way galaxy visible in the upper right corner. As one gazes upon this scene, they are reminded of the vastness and grandeur of our universe. Comets, these icy wanderers from the outer reaches of our solar system, create a dazzling display as they approach the Sun. Boiling and releasing gas and dust, they form a luminous tail that adds to their ethereal charm. Comet Lovejoy reached its closest point to our star on December 16th, 2011. Photographed on December 23rd from Cape Schanck on Australia's Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, this image perfectly captures nature's harmony between land and sky. The rocky coastline serves as an earthly foreground to complement the cosmic wonders above. The soft hues of twilight blend seamlessly with the rising sun's warm glow on this fateful morning. Against this backdrop, Comet Lovejoy shines brightly alongside billions of stars within our own galaxy - a true testament to both its uniqueness and insignificance in comparison to the vastness beyond. As we admire this photograph from Science Photo Library capturing a moment frozen in time during that great Christmas comet event in 2011 let us be reminded once again how small we are amidst such astronomical marvels.
