TEM of a chloroplast from a pea plant

False colour transmisson electron micrograph of a chloroplast in the leaf of a pea plant Pisum sativum. The chloroplast is the site of photosyn- thesis; a process by which plants obtain carbohyd- rates from carbon dioxide, using the energy from sunlight. The contents of the chloroplast are bound together by a double membrane.Internally, chlorop- lasts consists of stacks of flattened membranes called grana (black thread-like) suspended in a matrix of hydrophilic proteins. The grana contain the chlorophyll pigments & are the sites of light reactions during photosynthesis. The large white oval is a starch body, a photosynthesis product. Mag: X70, 000 at 10x8 inch, X10, 000 at 35mm size. Colorvir: Yellow/ lime green

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-color transmission electron micrograph of a chloroplast from a pea plant, specifically Pisum sativum. The chloroplast, depicted in vibrant yellow and lime green hues, is the epicenter of photosynthesis - the remarkable process through which plants convert carbon dioxide into carbohydrates using sunlight as their energy source. Enclosed within its double membrane structure, this microscopic powerhouse reveals an intricate internal arrangement. Within the chloroplast, stacks of flattened membranes known as grana take center stage. These black thread-like structures are suspended amidst a matrix of hydrophilic proteins. It is within these grana that the magic happens; they harbor essential chlorophyll pigments and serve as sites for light reactions during photosynthesis. A prominent feature in this image is the large white oval starch body, representing one of the products generated by photosynthesis. This TEM image offers us an extraordinary glimpse into the inner workings of plant cells and highlights their incredible complexity on a microscopic scale. With magnification levels reaching X70,000 at 10x8 inches or X10,000 at 35mm size, this visually stunning photograph captures both scientific precision and artistic beauty simultaneously. Its vivid colors and meticulous details make it an invaluable resource for researchers studying cell biology, botany enthusiasts exploring plant structures or anyone captivated by nature's wonders captured through advanced imaging techniques like transmission electron microscopy (TEM).
